What is a good way to check spark?

I have a Johnson 79 150hp. How do you check if the spark is good. When I pull the wire from the spark plug I can hear it. Thx for the info ahead of time.

Joe Reeves has covered this topic six ways to Sunday. He even gives you directions for constructing your own diagnostic device. If you will just do a search, it will pop up for you. If that doesn't work out for you, just wait awhile; I'm sure Joe will show up and give you the run down. I am amazed at Joe's patience. He's a good resource.

You need to purchase a spark tester so you see color and strength of spark. look up checking spark.

The best way is to remove all of the spark plugs and use a tester set up with a 3/8 to 7/16 gap for each spark plug wire. With no load on the engine, the firing should be maximized and produce a snappy, sharp blue spark.​


Or, you can make something simple with a board and nails. Or something like this:
