What is a "kickout" switch?

2007 Bayliner Merc 3.0...engine died on the lake. Wouldn't refire. Upon inspection my buddy says the kickout switch was flipped. Why would that happen? What causes it and is there something I could have done to prevent this. Is this common? Any help for a newbie boater would be great. Thank you

Deadman switch maybe? Mine is below the lanyard and has a tie to it so I could attach it to my belt and if I was thrown out of the boat it will cut the engine just like on a jet ski.

That is my guess.

possibly a kill switch??

I know my 1999 Bayliner has a red switch below the shifter that kills power to the motor unless it is switched to "RUN"

Maybe it is what some call a circuit breaker.

Have you read the Owner's Manual?
