As you approach the wake you want to slowy, steadily build tension on the rope as opposed to just turning and cutting as hard as you can like someone might do on a slalom ski.
The idea is to control the "edge" as you approach the wake and have the maximum amount of tension on the rope just as you reach the crest. It's that potential energy in the rope that translates into pop off the wake.
