What is a "steering tube"?

I'm a total novice, trying to help a young friend in the Grenadines deal with a problem concerning his 1990 Johnson 225. We can only talk on the phone, and I know precious little about boats. He's asking me to procure for him a "steering tube" which he describes as a hollow metal tube, about 15 inches long, give or take, threaded on both ends, that is hollow. Can someone help me understand what this part is, and how I can get a new one for him? Please forgive my lack of knowledge. Just trying to help someone in a difficult situation. Thanks very much.

if your friend has internet connection, tell him to go to brp evinrude.com, clik literature, engine diagrams, then his year and model, then mid section, there is a full blow up of the parts diagram, and parts numbers. the tilt tube, which i assume he's calling a steering tube, because the steering cable goes thru it. the part # is 0335553 for the tilt tube, doe she need nuts, washers, bushing?

The tube is usually built into motors made it the 90's. It is a tube that the motor pivots on when it is tilted up. The tube holds the motor end of the steering cable.

This picture is for mounting a steering tube for motors that don't have one built in. In this picture, it is the pipe looking piece. These pieces you can order from iboats.

Ask you friend if the tube is part of the motor or separate, as in the photo above. If it is part of the motor, go to a Johnson dealer with his model number and the dealer will be able to order the replacement parts.

Sometimes ebay has motors for parts. I don't believe you will be able to order that engine part new from anywhere but a dealer.

EDIT: Ops, Tashasdaddy beat me to the post! But his link to BRP will give you the parts diagram you need.
