I have a 1972 Volvo 270 outdrive that I have snapped off one of the pieces ( the thing that sticks out and you pass the bar through) that holds the reverse locking bar. My neighbor is a welder but I would like to know what type of metal it is so I can tell him. I am sure he can tell but I wouldn't mind knowing so I can least sound like I know what I am talking about.

Its the mounting collar and its a compisote alloy. As it is quite thin you might want to concider locating a good secondhand replacement (sometimes easier said than done). An average welder will do more damage than good, I would suggest you find a welder familiar with marine.

Thanks for the info. The piece that's need welding is about 3" long a inch tall and a 1/2" thick. For what it takes to replace the collar (I have done it before) I will take my chances on a weld. <br />P.S. According to Clymer manual (B770) for Volvo stern drives it is called both.
