My engine cover that pivots on two hinges has one hinge where all 3 screws are pulling out of the wood. What should I use to fill the holes, then screw the screws back in? Would regular wood filler hold?

drill out the stripped holes to a certain diameter....1/4" i.e. Then get a dowel rod that same size, cut off 3 pieces the lenth you need to fill the holes you just drilled. Glue in the 3 pieces, let the glue dry, then redrill the hinge holes into the newly filled holes. Probably be best to use waterproof glue, too.

Good old trick. I've used it around the house for door hinges, lock screws, etc.

Just make sure that the hole you drill matches the dowel. When you put the dowel in you should need to tap it in with a hammer. The tight fit, along with the fultes on the dowel and whatever you screw in (it forces the dowel to expand a little) will give you a repair that will not pull out, even before the glue dries.

the easiest way assuming u have a reasonable screw length and the wood u are fixing to isnt rotten is to just tap some thing slivers of wood down into the hole cut them off flush with the top and simply screw the screw back in..

trog100

My engine cover has small bolts with nuts on the backside. If yours is accessable this might be a good remedy.

DougV>

you can fill the holes with a two part epoxy. Drill and rescrew. Wont rot or get soft.

X2
Marine tex is excellent for that type of repair. Not cheap, but it is super handy. I've used it to repair stripped screw holes in wood, and to fill a couple deep, ugly gouges in my boat's hull (previous owner). Worked perfectly in both applications.

I've used tooth picks dipped in Elmers Glue. Stick em in and snap em off.
