What is "Gen X" in Mercruiser speak?

In looking for a match in mercarb numbers for a 2001 5.0 litre, I come across 1997+,Gen X.What does thios Gen X mean? Thx.

I believe the x is a bravo based drive. Race inspired with higher hp ratings... due to larger u joints, shafts, bearings, etc. Not sure about compatability as far as bell housings. There are x and xr drives depending on how new. About all I know. Someone else surely knows all the specifics of the drive.

Do you have a link to where you read this? There are different generations of Engines, not to be confused with the X series drives.

Also,are you sure it said Gen X and not Gen +
