1980 25ft Bayliner for $500 , can I really go wrong? even with the assumption that I'm going to have to rebuild or repower it. If you see any reason to run, let me known. Is this a GM block?
Thanks

can I really go wrong?

It depends.:)

Thats a 305 Chevy motor. It has what looks like an unsafe automotive distributer. Otherwise who's to say.

280 outdrive is a solid drive as long as its been maintained for the last 28 years.

Whats the story, do have know any history on it?

Parts are not cheap, so if you get the boat be ready to spend time and money, four digits, in the first year.

I have a similar drive train and like it.

By can't go wrong I mean the part out will pay for it if it isn't worth fixing.
It is a auction boat, so there is no history. Rebuilding the block should be fine if the marine only componets are still ok. I can upgrade to a 350 using the 305 parts right? It's the exhaust manifolds/elbows that get expensive because they can't be repaired, right? And I guess I will need to check the stringers for rot. Floor probly is shot too, can that be done with the "plastic" wood? Or just redo it in wood and glass it? Anything else I should look for?
Thanks

With all that hardware on the stern I`d "Thump it" first before spending money on it.Using a small hammer, start tapping all over the transom, anything that sounds hollow is rotted away.Buddy actually had one of those with a new 350, Even if you put lipstick on it, it`s still a slug.

Well, I brought it home yesterday, and it seems to be in pretty good shape. I had the stealership photocopy the title before they mailed it in. I went googling and found the previous owner. Gave him a call to see what I could find out. Turns out that he had this boat a long time, used it several times a year on the great lakes and Fox river. He winterised it at the end of each season, and the the end of summer 2007, the last summer it was on the water, was no exception. Then kids went off to collage, and family got busy and such and it never got used again. December 08 he decided to donate it to Charity, and thats how I ended up with it.
He said he did away with the points long ago and went to electronic ignition, why is that unsafe?
How winterised is it after two years? What steps whould I go through to bring it round?
Thanks
Brian

Can someone explain the "rebuild" process for the out drive? Bellows and gimbals and impellars and seals and o rings and such, What should be done in this case?

First thing - get a manual on the Volvo engine/stern drive that covers the specific year of the boat. This manual will give you instructions on proper maintenance and address issue you have raised. My best guess is that you should, at a minimum, change the drive bellows, install a new raw water impeller, and check the bilge pump for proper operation. You may want to run it on a garden hose and muffs in your driveway to assure the engine works and the stern drive shifts. Additionally, I would pull the prop and lubricate the drive splines and other stern drive grease points.

Assuming things are still well, change the oil/filters, get a tuneup

and --- get a manual !!

Best of luck.

Well, from what you've said it sounds like its got potential.:)

The automotive distributor has nothing to do with electronic ignition. The marine dist. have protection fro sparks that could ignite gas fumes in the bilge. It will run the way it is however is not considered safe or a viable alternative for a marine distributor.

Go to this link and type in aq225d in the engine type box. There is some helpful Info on that site.

Your raw water impeller is on the front of the harmonic balancer and should be replaced ever two years. You can get the OEM part through Iboats or you can get sierra after market parts at Napa.

Your going to want a manual for changing your bellows, ujoints etc. However if your dying to tear into it, have a look at this thread from last year when I changed mine out.

Have you Owned a boat with an I/O before?
