What is pin through VP280 o/d

I bought a 1976 Bayliner Skagit 2250 with a Chevy 350 and VP 280 o/d. Half way up the drive there is a pin sticking through from side to side that I didn't notice. The engine and o/d work great but can anyone tell me what this pin might be?

Probably to set the trim angle. But a pic will yield a more definitive answer.
