Ok so after weeks of fighting got it to fire off ( curious see help!!!!!! It wont fire off) . So now engine is running, I am wanting to know what is the proper break in procedure for a new engine. It currently has less then 5 min on it. Ran enough to set values. . Where do I go from here? I have been told to let it run for about 15 min @ about 1500 rpm to break the cam and lifters in. Is this necessary on a marine, non roller engine?. Once on the water ( yes I am seriously considering doing it this weekend when the temp is looking to be a hi of 52) how should I control the rpm?just in out and jump up on plane and run it like it will be next summer or what do you suggest? Thank you Iboats forhaving this great forum, thank you to all the members that have helped out along this vendetta getting me back to almost on the water again.

20 minutes at 2000 RPM for a non-roller (flat tappet) cam. make sure you have the proper break in oil (high in zinc)

then about 10 hours at varying RPM's from 1000 to 3500 with a few trips to WOT for about 10 minutes after a few hours for the rings.

do a search in the stickies, break in procedures for mercruiser is there.

Gv currently has Quakerstate 10/40 in it, is there an additive I can put in instead of change out the oil?

Did not recheck them, after it fired and values had final adjustment done it started to rain on us so we shut it down and covered it up. Will run a check before i break cam in and will post results. Probably be Friday afternoon before i get to it though

The oil I have in now is right at the full mark. The additive is a 16 ounce bottle, do you think it would be ok he I just put it in as is or I pull some of the oil out so it not over full?

How long should the break in oil ad in the engine before changing it out th 3' first time?

Will the muffs be enough to keep it cool during the cam break in or should I use another method, he so what?

Any other advise I should know before Friday feel free to let me know, and may thanks to all

Scott's got it right on the break - in...... You wanta do the heat and cooling cycle to the motor to set the rings.

Best to wait untill you put it the water......run it for a couple hours or so then change the oil.

Good luck!

It's best to break it in while in the water. You can vary the speed, plus it will be under load.
Re the oil, it should not be overfilled. Remove some to make room for the additive.

Would it be ok to do the twenty minute cam break in on the muffs ? My thinking there is incase something goes bad it is still at the house, on the trailer where all my tools are

I understand doing the rest of the break in outt on the water ( I might get a little cool bt that why they make coats )

In the attached link I see the procedure calls for engine rpm in the 1500 to 3000 range which will need some cooling. Make sure you have good water pressure on the muffs!
Note also they recommend changing the oil after the 20 minute run.

Pull the oil filter, drain it and measure how much drained out, should be about 16oz for the zinc additive you're adding. I'd go with a heavier oil than 10W40 for the on water,,,, Mercury 25W40, or 15W40, 20W50.

Get the engine started (muffs is fine) and do the 15-20 minutes at 1500-2000RPM cam break-in,,, it should have been done already when the engine was initially fired...

10 w 40 is fine with some zinc. It's 10 weight when cold and 40w when it's hot. You don't need summer oil in November in Illinois.
