What is some decent carpet?

I just got done re-decking my 84 ranger and I am to the carpet stage now. What is some good (cost effective) carpet to lay down?

I have been looking online and I see some home improvement stores have marine carpet.

Has anyone used these? Are they worth a hoot? Or do they fade and fall apart after a year or so?

Anyone with any info or experience on this your replies are greatly appreciated!

Re: What is some decent carpet?

My local upholstery shop carries (or can order) a marine grade carpet with a really thick rubber backing on it. It's expensive, but nicer than anything I've seen home depot or lowes carry. If you're serious about looking for quality and cost, I encourage you to go to a local upholstery shop and discussing the options. If they price gouge you can always order online but I'm willing to bet they'll offer more insight as to what you can use, what is easiest to work with and what actually holds up versus what doesn't than most here. Look at it this way, they warranty it!

I'm only putting carpet in my boat for my wife so it feels nice on her feet. It'll be snap in carpet so I can take it out when it's time to bloody up the decks.

Re: What is some decent carpet?

carpet is one of the nastiest things on a boat or home. and to think people walk on it bare footed, and lounge on it on the boat for sun.

to answer your question as to what is a decent carpet, i used home depot for my pontoon. 12x 16 $104.00 walk out.

Re: What is some decent carpet?

I bought my carpet at a flooring store. It's actually auto/marine carpet. It's been in the boat 3 seasons now and still looks great. I fish a lot and tread in it with dirty boots, etc. i find it easy to clean and looks awesome. The only mistake I made was not use marine glue in the beginning. I was told that an all purpose glue would work...it did not. Use a marine glue and you won't have any issues. Good luck.

Re: What is some decent carpet?

I agree with TD. Carpet in a boat collects nastyness, holds water to promote rot and hides sharp little things to stab bare feet.

I recommend bedliner type stuff. Very easy to keep clean, gentle on bare feet and protects, rather than destroys decking.

Re: What is some decent carpet?

I would think any carpet that is constructed for outdoor use and non-loop type would be ok in a boat. Make sure it is color fast and rubber backed. The non-loop is so fishing hooks won't get caught in it.

Personally, carpet is a great look but a hell of a time cleaning up after fish guts and blood are on it. The smell remains in it forever as well. Suntan lotions, molds, etc.

Durabak is a good non-slip alternative. I hope this helps you.

Good luck and all the best!

To replace what was in my Lund I found some at Cabelas. Good price and had it in 2 days. Looks like original.

I do see that Lund is getting away from carpet in their new boats.

I put Home Depot outdoor carpet in my old SeaSwirl and at 2 years it was showing it's age, at 3 years it needed to be replaced. It was UV treated blah-blah "outdoor carpet", but didn't hold up well in a boat. What really sucked, is that I had glued it down and the glue had no intentions of letting go of the worn out carpet,,, Arrrgh!

If I were to install carpet in a boat again, (which I'm not) I would spend the money and get a good grade of marine carpet, money well spent in my opinion.

I used Nautelex vinyl which I have been real happy with after replacing the carpet in my Four Winns. The boat stays cleaner, drier and feels great on your feet.

Re: What is some decent carpet?

Most non bass fisherman do not understand why carpet is used in 99% of all Bass boats, and that is to reduce fatigue from standing on your deck for up to 8-10 hours a day, it does not absorb too much heat (unless its black), plus the superb sound deadening it provides from dropped baits, weights etc.

Back to your question, Bass Pro sells some excellent 24 oz. Premium Marine Carpet for 10.99 per linear foot 8'x1', minimum 5' lengths. They also have some 16 oz. carpet kits at 129.00 for 6'x18', 139.99 6'x21', 174.99 8'x18', price includes marine carpet glue, pushpins and kraft paper for patterning.

Re: What is some decent carpet?

Bass Pro and Cabella's both sell good carpet at a decent price.

If you want to save a little money, 3 Years ago I replaced the carpet in my old 76 Bomber Marathon bass boat with the marine carpet that Lowes carries. It is still in good shape with minor wear (From hooks getting snagged).

I used the latex based marine carpet glue from Bass Pro (http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_44897_225004004_225000000_225004000_225-4-4. It does a "decent" job but has come loose in a few spots after fishing in the rain all day. Keep in mind that the floor in my boat was textured and I had to sand off the texture and may not have gotten REAL smooth.

However, I see that they now carry a different type for vinyl: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_98242_225004004_225000000_225004000_225-4-4

I would recommend the solvent based IF it will also work for carpet.

Good luck!!! :D ;)
