what is the correct way to remove shift lever

Need to remove shift lever so I can get panel off. Merc 470, shifter has HI-LEX on the plastic cap. On the handle there is a tilt trim toggle, but there also seems to be a tilt toggle on the panel along side the handle. Can I just cut the wires and splice later to remove? hi.....welcome to i boats.....

im not sure you are in the right forum.....so im going to ask the mods there opinion....they might move this to an area ..(like electronics or the i/o forum where the guys there are more framilliar with each particular shifter.
