What is the difference between a marine inboard motor and one out of a vehicle?

I have a 351 W in my boat and am curious if I could feasibly rebuild a second motor for back up from a old truck motor?

Internally, there is no real difference between a marine motor and a truck motor.
Most manufacturers use a marinized truck motor in their boats.

The difference is in the bolt on things such as the manifolds, water pump, carburetor, starter, fuel pump, alternator, thermostat housing and sundry other accessories.

Phantom is dead on and about the boat in the desert thing, when Cali sinks into the Pacific I think you will be having the last laugh!

Don't forget about brass freeze plugs. Steel will not hold up with raw water cooling.

You betcha!

I live about 30 miles east of the San Andreas fault line which, allowing for erosion, puts me just about in the right spot for beach front property.

Heck! We've even got the sand all ready. Just waiting to get the water installed.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled forum topic.

WizeOne is indeed a wise one. Absolutely use brass freeze plugs (or casting plugs for the more pedantic among us).
There are no doubt dozens of other piddly little things too (Use marine rated oil, add a water separating fuel filter, etc.) but the inside of the engine is still the same.

The cam shafts are different. If you build up a spare, make sure you take out the truck cam and put in a boat one. Different lift/duration/overlap stuff, based on operating conditions of a boat motor.
