What is the extra hole for in this aluminum gas tank?

There is a hole in this gas can that’s meant to be there but not sure what it’s for? Looks like there was a rubber hose or something that was cut off from it.. I’m guessing it’s a vent?

The hole to the left of the vented filler cap or the two nipples on the hose connector on the right?

Yeah the hole to the left of the gas cap. It was actually a plastic piece that was broken in it. I was able to extract it. Seems to be the same size fitting as the two nipple one on the right

Does the tank have any manufacturer markings? What is the capacity? Looks like about 6 gallons.

It looks like a semi-permanent tank or a semi-portable tank. It has elements of both. The thing to the rear looks like a sender could mount there and portables don't have sender. The cap is vented and permanents don't have vented caps or caps at all.

Where was the tank mounted? Filling it could be hard to do because tanks like this are usually held in place with straps and not easily slid out or back in when full.

A strange one.

I would get the right size plug for the hole. A plastic plug has no place in a metal gas tank.

I've not seen a tank like that one before, be careful filling it as it's not going to be grounded unless you pull it out and set it on the ground.

Looks like the extra hole could be anther feed line fitting.

There aren't any markings on it other than the numbers 3 84 imprinted on it. Capacity is about 6-10 gallons I'd say. Haven't filled it all the way up yet. The tank is a portable one I'm sure as I was able to easily move it out from under the center console.

That part is not a sender unit. It's just a mechanical fuel gauge. Which doesn't work by the way because the cork? or wood? Doesn't float anymore. Was hoping you or someone knew what I could use to make it float and work again and not be destroyed in gasoline?

Also, I just bought this boat, and noticed something odd on the fuel connector on the motor (1985 90hp Evinrude)? Maybe this explains the extra tank hole? What is the extra nipple for on the motor?

Looks almost custom made. Could have been for a few purposes. The hole seems larger than the other pick up hole, so maybe not for twin pick ups. Maybe a vent, but cal is vented. Might have been for level sensing but unusual size and would only be if the other larger hole was for filling perhaps ?
who knows. Certainly looks custom by the lovely welds. Looks a high quality build to be mass produced for a standard boat.

Do you have the fuel line? It should have the female connectors that match the male connectors on the motor and tank.

After about 10 years of floating in E10 gas, the lacquer on the cork floats dissolve, and they sink. Easy fix. A neoprene carb float from a Mercury outboard works fine.

That nipple doesn't look like a normal OMC tank fitting. Custom made for something??

It's only a 90[SUP]o[/SUP] male connector. A straight connector would interfere with the cap, causing skinned knuckles.

The extra hole still needs plugged with metal plug.

Stick wire down that hole, if the hole is a second fuel out line then there will be a fuel tube to the bottom of the tank. If the wire is free to move around the inside the tank, then consider it a vent out in the event the fuel cap is replaced with a fuel inlet hose...
