The definition of "hanger pilot" is somebody that sits around all day, sharing lofty opinions about flying airplanes instead of going flying.

The marine definition gals and guys is what?

Re: What is the marine equivalent of "Hanger pilot"

Having spent a lot of time in my youth sitting around hangars I have learned a lot from grizzled old men who no longer flew, but had many, many thousands of hours at the controls of a wide variety of craft.

There were those less experienced young smart alecs who called them "Hangar Pilots" until they learned who they really were. Then they shut up and listened.

Then there are the "Dock Skippers" that fit into the same mould. Some are blowhards trying to regain the respect they got as active young seamen and watermen, and some just trying to help out those still learning. There are also the high testosterone smart alecs who haven't learned one of lifes most important lessons: Youth is wasted on the young and wisdom wasted on the old.

Back in my younger days I worked at an auto dealership. We had what we called "Lot Lizards". These were customers that showed up, usually just before closing, and wanted to look at and drive every car on the lot. The same people would come back time after time and never buy, they just enjoyed talking about cars and wasting time. So maybe "Dock Lizards" is a suitable title.

Re: What is the marine equivalent of "Hanger pilot"

I came up around a guy that had flown everything the military had that was post WW2. He had flown everything the airlines had prior to the present electric jets. The man quit logging flight time at around 40,000 hours and 65 years old. He continued to fly crop dusters into his 80's and just died one day.
I ask him once to teach me how to be a spray pilot. He said, boy, I know you can fly, I done seen you do it. I can't teach you how to spray cause none of my planes have 2 seats. You got to teach yourself that. What I do have to do is teach you how to crash an airplane and walk away from it but do a good enough of a job to see to it that it belongs to the insurance company when you finish.
Took him one hour to show me I was a wan-a-b pilot. That was the first time I herd; Never run out of airspeed, altitude and ideas at the same time. Don't bust yo *** and by all means don't let nobody else make you bust yo ***. Now you do what I tell you to do and you do it right now. When I tell you its my airplane you grab yo nuts and hold on.
All the time and money I had invested up to that point was meaningless after a few hours with that crazy old man.
Our elders are our schoolmasters. Listen carefully.
