I have a 1986 mercruiser alpha drive. When doing searches on iboats and the net i come up with alot of ways of adjusting the lower shift cable and the cable from the throttle lever to the shift bracket. I've replaced the lower shift cable. Set the length of the cable to 6 inches. I've read that your suppose to cut some of the inner core off to match a certain length others say with the new cables it's not required. I've seen that the ss tube that gets screwed into the outer cable jacket is to be turned back out 2 turns from bottoming out. The cable from the throttle lever to shift bracket your suppose to adjust so the the holes line up with the studs. Others say get it lined up then turn the adjusting barrel 4 turns from the cable end. Others say you have to have the one stud that is slotted all the way at that bottom of the slot. So how do u properly adjust both the lower shift cable and the cable from the throttle lever to shift plate?
