I consider myself very good with Merc's in all aspects of doing water pumps, electrical, indexing flywheels etc....What is the secret when you can't even see the bolt that holds the shift shaft to the linkage on the large Johnson v6's... I have two of them that need pumps and I will be dammed if I am taking off the carbs, starter to get to this little I believe 10mm bolt...Merc's got OMC beat on changing water pumps...Piece of cake to line up the spines and drive shaft versus have to bolt the shift rod that OMC requires... Thanks for the reply's....

yeah tell me about it, not sure if the design engineers were thinking about those having to maintain it.
I normally disconnect the control cables, i then pull the hoses out the way and get in there with a flathead screwdriver as they normally have a slit for that on the head.
I have a magnetic pick up on telescopic pole ready to grab it. i use that to put it back in too

Not sure about the particular motor you are working on (whichever that is), but with the great majority of OMC motors you can "see" the bolt. Use a long extension or extensions (1/4" Drive preferred) and a wobble socket. There may be exceptions.

Let's not get started on the Merc's.

I wrestled with the same issue for hours. Finally I decided to take off the lower engine cover (is in 2 pieces, goes around the top of the mid section) and access was a breeze.
