What is this and what does it do? (see pic)

There is a black plug in the stern drive what does it do? Also does any one know where to find a replacement 15ft ball type thru the transom steering cable. I cant find one. Or I heard there is some kinda of retro fit steering cable. I really would like to find the ball type though.

Looks like a a pre 72 OMC High Profile drive with a steering arm. I have a hole just like that one on mine but it does not have that plug on it. It does not look standard and I have not seen one on any stringer I have looked at on this forum or on other forums.

ahhhh.... that's a bilge drain plug.

What it's doing on the back of your drive though... I have no idea.

Might be a good place to hang the drain plug when not in use

Its a OMC 140hp I took out the plug and it smelled like exhaust. I changed the water pump and thought it would tie into it but was bone dry.

I have an old boat with an OMC outdrive by the side of my shop. It is an old electric shift, but it appears to have a hole where your's is plugged. You can kinda see it in the picture below:

When you take the cover off that has the hole in in, there isn't much underneath:

That may or may not be helpful... but at least you can see what is beneath that cover!

just a wag... if that was a outboard, and w/o any experience on it, i'd expect water to be spiting out of that hole. not have it plugged... like i say though. i have no idea other than this wag...

I had the lower unit apart and it seems this does not go far and I did not spit any water out. I thought it might be a attachment for a garden hose or something like that. I notice on the side of the trim there is a cover for the hose attachment mine does not have that.
