Restoring an old panga and just removed the rotted out transom to find this

What is it and should i grind it out or chisel it out?? It is very crystal like and spider cracked. At the top of the stern it is very thin and towards the hull its roughly 3/4" thick and crystal like. Thoughts concerns??

I'd take a wild guess and say polyester resin without glass cloth if it broke up fairly easily.

You should remove it all and repair your transom correctly with plywood.

Looks like resin that was used to adhere the plywood transom to the hull. Normally, there should be chopped strand or something similar for strength. Probably want to grind it down to good fiberglass.

In the first picture it looks like someone drilled holes in the transom, which is the method of installing Cure-Rot, an epoxy compound for repairing rotten wood. Either way, the transom needs rebuilding.

This ^^^ is exactly what that is. An Attempt to use a "Rot doctor" type product to fix a rotting transom. This is a GREAT example as to why we do not recommend using this product here on the forum. Filing these pics in my Library!!!!

Its coming out regardless. I found it easier to chisel it out and take the grinder behind it to smooth the glass nice and clean. New transom will probably go in this weekend
