What is this hose that someone may have cut on my boat?

I'll be honest, I'm still learning about my boat. I can tell you one thing though, this wasn't cut when I used it last.

What is it, and is it likely someone did it on purpose? This is my first time putting the boat in a Marina. I don't know what I could have possibly done to **** someone off enough to do this.

MerCruiser Alpha outdrive, perchance? If so, I'll bet your speedometer no longer works.

Kinda hard to figger the picture out but judging from the diameter of the hose and the double-end barb, I'd say it's your speedometer pickup tube to the lower unit.

Betcha your speedo doesn't work !!!

I am not sure my speedo ever worked. Its a Mercury ELPTO 115 outboard. What you're looking at is from the port side with the motor trimmed up all the way (propeller to the left, motor to the right as you look at the picture).

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

Also, the fat end of the hose coming out of the upper unit is fat because it's already been spliced, or cut, and reconnected at least once. The speedo has moved before, but it never really worked.

So is it common for something like this to just split in half or what?

Everytime the lower unit is removed that tube is cut and either replaced to the lower unit, or given sufficent slack, re-spliced.

Look on the very leading edge of the lower unit for an approximately 1/8" hole running horzontially on about the same plane as the prop shaft. That will be the water supply hole to feed that tube. Blow into the cut tube and see if air comes from that hole, probably clogged with marine/aquatic debris. Using VERY low pressure air blow into the tube leading forward and watch your speedo. (just little burst of air now)

If you'll look closely, you can see where the tube has been spliced back together close to the end of the lowest piece of tube in the pic (the piece of tube that exits close to the shift rod).

nobody scuba'd up to your boat and cut the speedo tube. Stuff on boats break all the time. Give it enough time and everything will break at least once.

It was the speedo. I blew in both ends and then reconnected it without any issue. I guess I'm being paranoid.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not really out to get you. Lots of clicks on the phone? Black helicopters overhead? Those would not be good signs.

Re: What is this hose that someone may have cut on my boat?

The clicks on the phone are just the government keeping track of me, I'm used to that by now.

The paranoia is how everything always goes wrong.

The day I put the boat in the water (July 15th) the battery was low enough that I could get the lights and stuff to work, but not crank. We got hit at the landing by a drunken redneck who ran out of gas or something right as he was trying to recover his boat. Twice. Charged the battery over night and got in without issue the next morning. Found out shortly afterward that the bilge pump didn't work.

We've gone through 3 gallons of oil since then in 30 gallons of fuel. My wife lost her hat, which SUNK, rather than float long enough for us to turn around and get. The bimini top came off because we lost a screw while underway. Luckily I had an old one under the console to replace it. We got pulled over by DNR twice in one day because it was water fest. Today we lost 3 shark rigs and two smaller double rigs to ... well who knows what, they bit them off and ran.

I guess it was good enough that they were biting like that. So you know, I can't complain?
