What is this motor?

Just bought a used powerhead - suppposed to be a 14HP Johnson. It is a two cylinder and looks similar to a 1952 Johnson 14HP I have (my motor is seized - bought from a dishonest person on eBay), but the driveshaft must be smaller than the 14 I have. The soft plug on the motor has the numbers 1270011. There are no other plates on the motor. There are part numbers on the head and a couple other places, but I don't know what is useful.
I need to know who made the motor, what year it is, and how to get a manual and specifications for it.

Henry Hirise - First, welcome to Iboats.
In order to get you straigtened out, we're going to need your model number from your 'keeper' outboard. There is no such thing as a 1952 Johnson 14hp - all they made that year was a 3, 5, 10, and 25hp. The closest I can come up with is the 1950 SD-20 (16hp) and the 1956 FD-10 (15hp).

Re: What is this motor?

Sorry, I gave the wrong info. The "keeper" motor is an Evinrude, serial number plate says 15012 12410. I got the HP and approximate year off a site that listed Evinrude serial numbers. There are obvious differences in the head and cylinders, but the carburetors look almost identical and the two tubes that come off the carb (air silencers?) look almost identical also.

Henry,
The keeper is a '53-'54 15hp. That model was identical for those two years.

It's mostly a guess, but judging by the serial number on that power head I think it's a 1955 engine. If it's the same physical size as your other powerhead, I would expect that it's also a 15hp. I belive the '57 and later 18hp engines that replaced the 15hp didn't have the silencers, so I don't think it's one of those.

Oh, you said the powerhead was painted Johnson colours, right? The only year Johnson sold a 15hp engine was 1956. So it must be at least that.

If that's right, I'm surprised it doesn't fit.

The Old OMC Site

Re: What is this motor?

The engine is painted green, if that helps any. There are a few other numbers on the powerhead, but they appear to be casting numbers. The cylinder head is stamped with 303530. The two side covers (on the side of the block and near the soft plug) are stamped with 301848. There is a casting that the carburetor mounts to that is stamped with 376153. The other motor that I have that is known does not have a soft plug anywhere on the motor, and the two side covers as well as the cylinder head are shaped differently. The head does appear to be the same bolt pattern and spacing for both motors.
