Sorry the pics are kinds big, didn't have time to resize them.
This is some kind of hard plastic compound applied to a section of my hull floor, i found it after chipping out the foam, some of it broke off while i was removing the foam but the rest is stuck on pretty well. I'm trying to figure out if it is a patch of some sort....or what? I don't see any obvious signs of repair on the underside of the boat, unless the repair was made before the gelcoat and paint were applied. i have no reason to believe the floor has been replaced since the original manufacture date, but it is a 77....
thanks in advance for the help

may not even be a patch, just sloppy workmanship.

Re: what is this on my hull floor?

thanks for the response guys, i'll work on it after i get the rest of the foam removed, didn't know if i should leave it, or try to remove it. but i'll grind it off.
i'm thinking somone must have redone the floor at some point before me, i've found so much weird stuff in the floor during the removal, at one point there was a plastic liner around the foam, at another the was a pvc pipe in place of a stringer, unless the bayliner factory chucked in whatever they could find to build their boats back then.....i wouldn't be surprised.
once i get it all hulled out, and start rebuilding should i take the boat off the trailer before fiberglassing? will it bow out once i take it off the trailer if i didn't do the work off the trailer.
i know i'm gonna have to put the cap back on before i glass the floor, but i wasn't sure about the stringers?

Re: what is this on my hull floor?

It may have been some sort of liner or bag used to isolate the foam in the hull, sort of like filling a trash bag with foam while inside the cavity?
I've cut apart a few that were done that way. What make boat?
I had one that had what appeared to be foil backed Tyvek lining the areas between the stringers and all around the trapped in fuel tank. I wasn't sure if it was to make the foam less a part of the boat or not but if so, it didn't work, the foam had expanded all around it and into every little crevice.
It could have also been a barrier to stop the foam from expanding too high, whether to prevent it from adhering to the upper layer or the sides of the boat beyond the floor?

They also could have been trying to make a water proof barrier to keep bilge and deck water from soaking the foam? Encasing the foam would make it more water resistant in a draining bilge or protect it from deck drain off.

Its a 1977 bayliner mutiny runabout, hence my handle:)
I wondered about the protection idea, but it wasn't throughout the floor, only in certain area's. i remember reading in the flotation idea thread about someones idea to encase the foam in plastic liner so it would be "easy" to remove if it got wet.
I find it hard to believe someone rebuilt the floor since the factory, there were really no signs removing the cap, or the floor.....but who knows

I did a few floors and several repairs in a few older Bayliners over the years, on one of them, when we cut open the floor, we found several cigarette packs, and a couple of soda bottles trapped in the foam. I figured that they got tossed there when the boat was built.
So far, every Bayliner I've opened was done different in some way or another. None of them were exactly the same. But this can hold true for a lot of boats.
I have a 1962 Glasspar which had a new floor put in before I got it, if I didn't know better and seen the boat a few years ago with the floor removed, I would have never thought it was touched. Its glassed in too perfect around the edges and they added color to the final coat of glass to make it wear resistant. It looks as if it were the original floor.

The level of ability of some do it yourselfers can surprise you once in a while, but it was more common back then for a boat to be taken to a marina to be re decked. I have a 1971 Duo that had the deck all redone by a pro shop, it's a fantastic job. I actually hate to part it out but I tried to sell the boat with no luck but got more than what I was asking for the boat for just the Mercruiser engine. I put the seats, new tank, steering and dash, and other various bolt ons into an outboard Starcraft I have.
