What is this part called?

Have had trim tilt issues since last year and this thing had a severely cracked cover. What in the world is it called? Mounted on port side of trim bracket at the top of the piston. I would like to be able to replace it especially since it is now in pieces.

First picture shows it removed:

Re: What is this part called?

Thank you VERY much! Can you tell me exactly what it does?
It is a trim gauge sending unit that mounts to the engine, It hooks up to a trim gauge at your dash.

The purpose of the trim gauge on the dash is to give you a general idea of where the engine trim level is sitting. (Up or down)

That sending units job is to move the gauge up and down as you raise and lower the outboard, That is all it does, Nothing more;)

Ok duh on my part that makes sense.

Do you think there is anyway water getting into that sender could cause the trim to rise the motor on it's own if it got wet?

No, It will Not trim the outboard engine up on it's own, It will only move the gauge on it's own by way of shorting out.

If your engine trim system is shorting out and making the trim go up on it's own then there is something wrong in the wiring anywhere between the trim button on the shifter handle all the way to the trim pump motor it's self.

If that is the case I would start looking to see if there is anyplace two wires could start touching each other by either chafed wires, Or a wire connector plug could get some water between the wires and cause a short, I have seen that happen up behind the shifter handle control box, The wire plug was lying on the floor in water and corroded out the wire plug letting the wires touch each other and operating the trim pump motor on it's own, Just something to be aware of.;)
