What is this part for?

Well I am done dropping a new 4.3 in my boat and am starting the process of drive alignment. Greased and inserted alignment tool and when I pulled it out of the transom this round spring was on it. I assume it is critical so what is it for and how difficult is it to put back where it belongs? Specs are a 4.3 Volvo GL PBYC with a SX C2 drive. Thanks as always.

I know nothing about Volvos but that is the garter spring off of a seal. Almost impossible to put back on. There must be a seal on the shaft somewhere, and it needs to be replaced. Sorry:(

i may be wrong but looks like the o ring that goes in line with the water tube when u are mating the lower back on to the boat..if that is the case u have to remove the lower and put er in there

It's not an O-ring, it's a round metal spring.

Just guessing here, but if it is similar to a Merc, there is a grease seal between the gimbal bearing and the coupler. The seal would keep grease from the gimbal bearing from migrating along the driveshaft into the boat, or maybe in front of the bearing, don't know but it is in there somewhere:confused:. Probably not critical, but again that is just a guess.

I bet you're right. Looks like there is a seal in front of the gimbal bearing after looking at the parts diagrams. Looks like my plans of getting this boat ready tomorrow are shot. :( Guess I can still align the engine though. Anyone know how difficult this is to replace?

Another guess, but I wouldn't, think it would be too bad. Seal puller or slide hammer should pop it out, probably could borrow them for free from Autozone. Mostly a matter of how easy it is to get too.

According to the manual, that looks like how to do it. Just go through the u-joint bellows with a puller and remove the gimbal and then the seal. Looks like NAPA carries the seal but I doubt mine stocks it. Even though mine is OK I might go ahead and replace the gimbal bearing while I'm at it. When it rains it poors, new motor, then new fuel pump and now this but I am sure becoming familar with my boat
