What is this part? (Pic)

This was taken off of a boat with a mercruiser (but I don't think it is part of the engine that is why I am posting it here).

I thought it was a regulator for an alternator but they are usually small and attached to the alternator and thought maybe it wasn't that. Then I thought maybe it was an isolator but after looking at wire diagrams I think maybe it isn't that.

This thing has three terminal posts, one has a wire going to the alternator (+), one post has a wire coming from the starter (the one that would usually go straight to the alternator), and one that grounds to the engine (this ground wire is why I thought it wasn't a isolator as all the diagrams I've found show no ground wires).

Any ideas?

The big rusty lump is a transformer. I would guess this is either a battery charger or more likely just a maintainer. It's appears small to be a full on charger.

I agree that the transformer means it is an AC component rather than DC so it is not part of the DC power system for the boat. As suggested, probably an early battery charger.

Thanks guys for the help. I'll take a look around for chargers or transformers and see what I can find.

Sorry about posting it in two different places but I didn't realize this electrical section was here or I would have put it here first and I wasn't sure if I could move it or not so I thought I would just post it here.

Might also be some sort of filter.

maybe i'll take a pic of the alternator and the set up tomorrow to help.
