what is this part?

here is a pic of a part I cannot identify and was found in lower unit upon disassembly for lower unit lockup. it's a merc mark 25, 18hp, sn 862456. it is magnetic, slotted head, smooth bottom and about 3/8" diameter x 1/4" thk approx. anybody out there have an idea?

Moved it. With the lower unit torn apart, it is about repair.

I’ve had a few of those units apart - never seen a magnet in one. Doesn’t mean they didn’t tuck one in there somewhere, I’ve just never noticed. I’d leave it out, unless you spy an obvious place for it. A loose magnet is certainly not a good thing.
