how much trouble would it be to replace and is it needed for the motor to operate. on a scale of 1 to 10 how important is it. If i understand correctly it just keeps me from trimming the motor to much? Good Work guys. Thanks alot

Re: What is this piece?

You could go to the trouble of replacing the cable but most likely the microswitch that it connects to is toast.

The microswitch is mounted inside the starboard trim bracket. The bracket has to be removed to get access to the switch. There is also a spring inside that most likely is completely corroded away.

I did take mine completely apart and found the switch perfectly OK but covered in a sand/grease/dirt mix. After some searching I found a perfect replacement spring. After a good cleaning I put the whole thing back together and it works great.

Most don't bother to repair. You are correct in how it operates. Just be aware that when you trim out there is no automatic stop.

awesome. Thats exactly what I was hoping to here. And last but not least could anyone point me in a direction of where to start putting the motor back on and hooking everything up? the motor was pulled off about 7-8 months ago when i had the floor re-done. Completely clueless about where to start. The guy that was supposed to do all the work for me bailed out on me. thanks again guys

The serial numbers are on the transom bracket. There may alos be a serial number on the block, near the transfer covers. As a last resort, you can look up the part number of the block, and get some idea of the year. Also that style of PTT was discontinied by the mid eighties.
