I don't want to wear out my welcome, because I have gotten more help & advice from this forum than I could have imagined, but I have no idea what this is, I think something with the choke, but whatever it is not hooked up to anything.

1983 EVINRUDE 115

Picture 1 (the wires come from spark plug area up under flywheel, make a pitstop at a connector to continue on <2 wires in, 2 out> then to this front part of the engine by the air intake ) :

www.members.aol.com/cthmpsn04/wiretocontraption.jpg

Pic 2 (the $1,000,000.00 mystery device) :
www.members.aol.com/cthmpsn04/sideview_contraption.jpg

Choke contoller or something? If it ain't hooked up and the engine has been running fine, should I take it off...it's hooked up to brass rods that run down to the carbs?

I'm lost, drop anchor!

Looks like a good place for a solenoid to activate a choke. Remove the airbox, wiggle the brass rods, and look in the carbs for plates moving and that's what you got.How do you start your motor when cold if this is deactivated? Do you have a control switch for the choke? Does it do anything?

Well, it tends to start pretty well. Really don't have to crank it. You can push in on the ignition key to activate the choke, but it ain't that one in the pictures. What I mean is if you stand next to the motor and have somebody push in on the key, you can hear a clicking towards the bottom of the carbs. Is there 2 chokes one for each set of carbs? Maybe the bottom one is hooked up and is working, but the top one is disconnected? Uggh. I'm choking.
