Ok just installed new thermostats, cleaned out the cylinders, water jackets, new head gaskets, torqued down everything, had to put two heli coils in, ran it, retorqued. Everything sounds great! No misses, no hiccups in the engine. This thing purrrrrs!!!. But just above the whale tale where the exhaust is. I'm getting a slight sludge coming out. Appears to be a water and oil mixture, but very slight. Should I be concerned? Is this somewhat normal? 1989 90 hp Johnson j90TLAEM. Just seems to run to good for any problems.

is it greenish in color? sounds like the carb may leaked at some point in its life and your seeing that mess coming out from below the cowling. but a picture would help us give you a certain answer rather then a guess.

Re: What is this sludge?

It's grey. I will post a picture later today, but I have looked at other threads and most say it's coming out of their prop. Mine is coming out of the two slots just above the whale tale where the exhaust is. I was letting it idle for probably 15 minutes on the muffs to make sure I did not have any leaks in the head. The spark plugs were black and oily, so I was thinking it was unburned fuel that was going out of the exhaust mixing with the exhaust water. Anyway I will post a picture later for you guys.

Thanks!

sounds like exhaust goo to me. your picture will confirm. but any time you run the engine on the hose for periods of time even 15 minutes you will see odd events like that occurring.
