Can anyone identify that discoloration at the bottom of the engine near the prop? The engine is all grey and that part is white. Considering purchasing... is this an issue?

Also, is a Mariner 25 horse any good?

Not being able to see very well from the picture, is it some substance or the paint gone in that area. If it is something on it, could it be salt corrosion? It could be the paint gone and you are seeing the primer coat or even some bare metal... Either way it probably should be repainted to help with future corrosion. It could even be where the motor has seen some sand abrasion...

You're right, it's from the water and elements- fresh water.

The boat has the same problem also. What Lake in MI. has that boat been docked? Is this the same boat you plan on buying for 1600 bucks?

Really hard to tell. Primers are yellow, so it doesn't look like the paint wore off. Looks more like a surface coating of some sort, probably from the water its been in.

Mariners are cheap Mercurys. Its a no-frills version. Trackers are low end as well. If you can get it cheap enough it could be an OK first boat, but don't expect it to be a good value.

Just wonder if the gunk is inside the motor as well?

well us in WI have always known you in MN have something in the water over there. We have the same issue hear I have been told it's the calcium, We have six lakes by name, but are one body. Some spots don't have it, some do. Some think that people are still letting sewer water flow into the lake. But in 1982 the DNR did a door to door dye test and caught them. But that doesn't mean some drain fields aren't still leaching. On this lake i notice that boats that sit in the water that is shallow have this issue.

Looks like the motor was left tilted mostly out of water and that is just the algae line. Dried algae. Should scrub off.

the line is on a 45* angle, but when you tilt it up, you will see that it's horizontal and lines up with the water line on the transom. everything below the water line is either antifouling paint or dried scum/algae. No problem.

However, if it's sandy crystals, it's corrosion from electolysis and might be bad. Happened to me once when I left the key on and motor down overnight in high salt water.
