What is this supposed to do?

I'm working on a 56 30 HP johnson. I've got gas/oil mix leaking out weep hole. Drained a little lube out of l/u, its clear no water. Pulled powerhead to check seal. While p/h was upside down I turned the flywheel and gas shot out a little hole towards lower seal. Determined that the little dohykie is called a Drain Valve Assembly. What is its purpose and is it supposed to shoot gas in to l/u.? It does make a pretty rainbow while fishing but kind of a waste of gas.

Thanks

How do I correct this problem, as my manual dosen't mention this valve at all.

Re: What is this supposed to do?

It dumps gas that puddles in a couple locations overboard. FYI, the locations it picks up from are just behind the top reed set (the one on the left) and just left of the bottom of the lower crankcase chamber. It is a waste of gas, and some people have tried some setups to recover it. But, by reports, if your engine is tuned correctly, it is not worth recovering. Modern outboards recirculate this gasoline rather than dumping it, usually putting it in through one of the intake covers or into the intake manifold.
The drain valve assy is a pair of one way valves to pump the gasoline from those two puddling locations. Crankcase compression pulses pushes the gas through them, and they don't allow it to be sucked back.
So, it's doing exactly what it's supposed to do. If you have excessive fuel puddling, it may be because you are running too rich. Since your carb is fully adjustable, you should be able to correct that easily enough.
The passage that is leaking on your outboard is connected to the 'just beneath the left reed' puddling location.
My OEM manual makes almost no mention of it except how to take it apart and clean it.

Further reading.

Many thanks on the response. I just did a carb rebuild mainly because the rubber float bowl gasket was falling apart. Probally the original gasket. I'll have to put the motor back together and back out to the lake and readjust the carb. One more question, the age of this motor would it be wise to check and or replace the lower powerhead seal befor putting unit back together?

Paul, checked out the threads you suggested. Made up a recovery setup. I ran the motor about 1 hour, all different rpms. I picked up about 3 ounces of fuel. The best thing was when I loaded boat back up no leakage at weep hole. I'm not a tree hugging person, but feel better that I'm not dumping fuel mixture in my lake.
