what is this???

I have a question about these pictures, one is of the centre stringer, what was under neith it when I hogged out the old material, its pinkish in color, hard but is fairly light.

The other picture is of my transom it seems like its leaking white stuff, almost like battery acid I pulled off some of the fibre glass and the transom is still solid but I have no idea what this stuff is?? its soft and can be scraped off easily

The pink stuff looks alot like regular automotive Bondo the other stuff I have no clue .

The pink stuff is probably just a poly based bedding compound. I have seen same looking stuff in my Bayliner where the cap meets the hull.

Not sure about the white stuff...

It might have been a primer or sealer that has started to break down. It doesn't appear to be leaching out of the wood, so my guess is it was applied to the wood. If the wood is dry and rot free, try sanding it and applying new glass/resin to seal it up.

Or it could be a mold/mildew. Try looking at some under a microscope. If its organic, you will be able to see the organic structure. If its filler or sealer of some sort, it will be uniform and non-organic looking.

..theres some funny stuff going on with the transom, whats the block of wood NAILED to the transom for?
and the screw in hook above the drain?

maybe someone has been in there before and thats bilge paint that was glassed over.

Yea i agree! I have not seen something NAILED to a transom like that before. If i saw that i would be curious as to how long those nails are, if you know what im getting at.

Oh and the screw in hook was for the drain plug. There was a chain that the plug hooked to so that way you don't loose the drain plug.

Just the casual way you said it was just funny, like doesn't everyone have one out in the garage? (looking at the skill level of your hardtop project, impressive, I am sure you probably do have one in your shop)

I'd guess mold too.

If you want to do a half-a** test, grab a bottle of bathroom cleaner from your house, the spray kind that kills mold and mildew, and spray it on a small area. If it's something like glue leaching it it won't do much, but if it's mold then you'll get a "dead" area that's a different color in less than a day.

Either way, I think that transom needs a new core.

Hello escapade...

First pic is a poly fairing compound. Lots of times the plant will use a red mek to mix it up. ( bondo would be very expensive in manufacturing for this application ).

Second pic ..hmm.. well first off..looks like that mid area has been repaired already. No telling what they used.

Did that white seep out of the wood ? Or was it just under the glass.. ?

I doubt mold is at hand. Im leaning in the direction of a resin that got damp/wet during the lam process.

Try taking some acetone to it.

Yeah, that probably did sound funny. But I have kids, so there are two or three microscope kits in various closets around the house collecting dust.

I guess I do deserve a good ribbing for that one....

Well, I suppose another theory would be that someone repaired the old transom at some point with a mixture of powdered cocaine and some kind of organic resin, kinda like seacast except with a much higher street value.

The plan probably was to drive the boat into the US and then reprocess the drugs at a "boat shop" in someone's garage, then junk the rest. But they got arrested on the way in for carrying a small bag of weed for personal use and the boat was confiscated and auctioned off.

Since they didn't want to spend more time in jail and pick up heavier fines for smuggling and intent to distribute, they decided to keep quiet on the transom full of coke, and they never found out what happened to the boat. Until now.

So if you find yourself staying up late, not able to sleep, but instead working more and more on the boat, it's probably because your transom is full of cocaine.

Or, it could just be you've become one of us loonies....

the white stuff is almost like a paste, it comes right off, the same kind of stuff was on a rubber tube that held the fuel line, and some electrical into the splash well from the blidge area.

I'll take some test hole in the transom to see if it needs to be replaced, I will pick up some 1/2inch exterior ply just in case so I'll have it on hand if the transom is bad, however it does feel solid.
