Hello. Is this a pic of a ground??? that is under my helm. Not a good pic but basically none of my gauges work. It has a black wire coming off of it connected to nothing at the moment...

Thanks, Pete

Strange looking because the screw/bolt is through fiberglass, which is not a ground. Is there something on the other side of the screw?

Did the gauges work and stop?

I have to agree with GA_Boater. Surely isn't a ground. But it could have been used as a terminal spot for another wire to be attached. But why there..IDK... :noidea:

I was wondering if it was a junction point but doesn't make much sense to put it in like that.

Well.I have a bigger story.Yes the gauges used to work (over 5 years ago)...Boat has been in garage during restoration.I also have an issue with engine turning over but no start.I have no voltage at all at coil. My boat is a 1987 SeaRay with 3.0 mercruiser/alpha one.New battery and plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, condensor. My blower, horn and tilt/trim operate fine.Maybe my wiring harness???...Sorry so long...
Thanks again,Pete

Hope you meant sorry it's so short...The more info you can provide the better we can try to help.;)

Sounds (looks) like some of the wiring under the dash is installed in the wrong location.

Does the boat have a radio in that general area of that wire in the photo? Sometimes the antenna wire would get connected to the windshield frame thru bolt to try and help get better radio reception.

You need to see if the back of the key switch has 12v power at all three wires. 12v always to red wire (B) Battery. Then 12v to purple wire (i) < ignition at first click/turn of the key, next turn to start and see if you have 12v at the yellow/red wire (S) < start. Also check/touch all your ground wires (they should be Black) to see if they are tight and installed to the - (< negative) side of the gauges.

Be sure your safety lanyard kill switch is in the run/on position by physically moving it a few times to the run position.

Update....Googled " mercruiser 3.0 wiring diagrams" and found some very helpful drawings. Of course ya'll helped as well...Any How, it was the 20 amp fuse near the starter switch. It has a plastic shroud over it so it was not obvious. I went ahead and checked voltage at switch.Black lead on ground and other on switch source. It is labeled on rear of switch.12 volts good there. Traced purple wire to first gauge.Checked voltage there. NO voltage. I checked other wire off switch that was green. Had good 12 volts on it.The fuse is between the starter switch and first meter purple wire goes to. I pry open the fuse shroud and pieces of the fuse fell on me. I found another 20 amp fuse. Gauges then came to life and had 12 volts on coil now! Boat started right up! Music to my ears! Has been over 5 years! Now I can finish her up and hit the water soon! Thanks again to all and to google!
