what is value and how hard to fix40 hp evinrude

i have the opportunity to purchase a small fiberglass boat with an evinrude 40 hp engine the engine is a late 70's model ,78 i think. he says the lower unit has gear issues and needs to be replaced or fixed my question is ,how much will it cost to fix (ballpark) and is it worth 300 bucks for all.the boat is worth the 300 but i don't want it if the motor is gonna cost me out the rear to fix any help is appreciated

There is absolutely no way anybody can answer that question without taking the lower unit apart to see what the problem is. It could be $100 or hundreds of dollars.
