That's going to be region specific, but here I use white bait for the most part, threadfins if they're big enough.

Ditto...what Sam says.

We have several varieties of what is called white bait: greenbacks, threadfin herring and pilchers are all like sardines. Only bigger. Most is netted inshore and brought off shore where they catch everything. Some bigger varieties travel in big schools off shore and can be sabikied and also can't be resisted once dropped to the bottom.

I have salvaged many a grouper trip by being able to find this bait and drop them down to grouper that previously had lockjaw...:)

My favorite bait for halibut are queenfish, and any size will do. I catch them on sabiki type rigs in the bays. (I fish off Orange County California)

We use live ghost and mud shrimp for sturgeon. Live mudsuckers and bullheads for stripers.

I'm with tnduc...mullet, menhaden (pogies and bunker in some areas), live shrimp in the Summer, squid.

As far as artificial, I like curllytails on a jig for inshore.

I use artificial probably 95% of the time anymore.

Soft plastics, Parachutes and top water biats for Stripers. Soft Plastics, and speed jigging for tuna.

The only bait fishing I do anymore is when surf fishing for Red Drum. Whole Bunker heads are my favorite there.

I do most of my fishing in sarasota bay and I have had alot of luck with fresh shrimp tails on jigheads near any structure, as far as artificial goes I like a good popper on the grass flets for the reds.

yeah, that's pretty much what I use when I go out to Napa. Gets expensive. I've had pretty good luck getting bullhead and mudsuckers in little traps off the sea ranch shore. Not much luck catching anything with them there though. Hoping it stops raining this week so I can get out on the water.

I'll be off the shore at the Sea Ranch later this afternoon :( I guess it's better than nothing for a rainy day.

What I'd really like to learn about is lure casting or jigs for striped bass out in Tuburon, but I'm still new to fishing.

As for region, I am usually in Napa (29 bridge, sea ranch, marker 7 or 9), Bodega (outside jeti), China Camp (cliffs), Tiburon (paradise), hwy 37 (shore by the bird watching place) or Black Point (2 miles in)....not sure about
other places around here.

Still trying to figure out trolling, but always looking for new tips with bait.

thanks guys! and anymore tips or tricks are welcome. I guess it would have helped to tell where I fish, but there's always good info for fishing based vacations in other places :D

Nobody here use prawns?

I'm in Borneo. Most of the locals here use live prawns (shrimp? What's the difference?) for pretty much everything.

Here on the West Coast of Canada I like to use a piece of Octopus on a jig for Halibut and "Plug Cut" Herring to troll for Salmon

Yeah mate, we use prawns here in Aus... and if you don't catch anything there's always a few spare for the barbie! Lots of the succesful fishermen use livebait (mainly potty mullet). I don't and maybe that's why I'm a fisher not a catcher. :(

Fishing in NJ:

Stripers-Clams in the spring, eels in the fall. Live line bunker as well
Bluefish-Bunker chunks
Fluke-Squid, however to be honest the best "bait" for fluke these days is a 4" chartreuse gulp mullet
