Re: what kind and/or year is this outboard?
Electric shifts are NOT junk. Every time that story gets repeated, it gets bigger. A worn out and abused electric shift is junk. So is a worn out and abused manual shift. Parts for an electric shift are expensive. Ever price a clutch dog and gears for a manual shift? A well cared for electric shift will outlast a manual shift. Some parts are getting rare, that doesn't make it junk. I have one of those rare and expensive NOS shift switches here on my desk.
People turn perfectly good electric shift lower units into junk by tearing into them not knowing what they are doing. Or by not doing regular preventative maintenance.
