I need to replace the battery on my boat. It's needs to power a 200hp Mercury Outboard. What brands do you recommend? And more important, how many cranking amps do I want? How many do I need?

Thanks.

I got a basic marine battery from Walmart for my 175, about $45. Marine batteries have the wing-nut terminals otherwise there's not much difference from a car batt. You don't need a lot of CCA in a boat battery, even a 200hp turns over easier than any car engine (notice the emergency rope starter on the side of the cowl).

If you read in your manual, I'll bet it will say that you need a minimum of 350 cca (cold cranking amps) for your starting battery.

Personally, I have a 850 cca compromise battery on my 86' merc 175.... Compromise means that the battery has both the capacity for starting and trolling purposes...I'm not saying that's what you need, but Wally world has them for around $69... It's yellow in color..

Anyway a 450-550 cca battery will be plenty to start your motor... Just make sure it is a marine battery like DasBood said. If you run a lot of gadgets while the motor is off, you may want to look at something like I have.. Good luck...

If your 200 hp mercury is fuel injected, or opti-pop, you will need a much higher CCA battery..

If it's either of these 850 is the minimum..

Scott..
