What kind of coolant do I put in my 2005 Jeep GC

I'm getting ready to do a cooling system flush and fill on my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I bought two gallons of non-diluted Wal-Mart SuperTech long life antifreeze which I assume is the green stuff. Went to do the job last night and it looks like it's got the red stuff in it now. Can I replace the red with the green? Should I be using something else altogether?

The WKJeeps site said this which I didn't really understand.

Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 5-year/100,000 mile formula
p/n 68048953AB (formerly 5066386AA)
MSRP $21.95/gallon.

The recommended mixture is 50/50 ethylene-glycol and water. Never use pure antifreeze.

The use of aluminum cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, and water pumps requires special corrosion protection. Mopar? Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (MS-9769), or the equivalent ethylene-glycol base coolant with organic corrosion inhibitors (called HOAT, for Hybrid Organic Additive Technology) is recommended. This coolant offers the best engine cooling without corrosion when mixed with 50% ethylene-glycol and 50% distilled water to obtain a freeze point of -37?C (-35?F). If it loses color (red/orange) or becomes contaminated, drain, flush, and replace with fresh properly mixed coolant solution.

Notes:

Antifreeze mixture must always be at least 44%, all climates year round. Maximum protection (-90d) is provided with a 68% mixture protection.

Do not change the thermostat for summer or winter operation. If replacement is ever necessary, install ONLY the correct type thermostat. Other designs may result in unsatisfactory cooling performance, poor gas mileage, and increased emissions.

CAUTION: Use of Propylene-Glycol based coolants is not recommended, as they provide less freeze protection and less corrosion protection.

CAUTION: Mopar? Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (MS-9769) may not be mixed with any other type of antifreeze. Mixing of coolants other than specified (non-HOAT or other HOAT), may result in engine damage that may not be covered under the new vehicle warranty, and decreased corrosion protection.

CAUTION: Do not use coolant additives that are claimed to improve engine cooling.

Avoid non-HOAT mixtures, such as Prestone 50/50, that claim they can be used in vehicles of "all makes, all models".

I think the SuperTech is ethylene-glycol but says nothing about having HOAT in it.

If the engine is still under warranty I would stick with the OEM stuff even if it was expensive.
But if the warranty is off, as long as the jobber anti freeze is formulated for aluminum parts or mixed metals (steel/aluminum) (you still get electrolisys in motors with mixed metals) I would go for it.

I only know of a couple of different anti freezes, regular for steel block, the kind your looking at for mixed metals, and low silica for diesels.

(still have to watch the PH balance to avoid internal pitting)

and your not supposed to mix colors green, purple, red, orange, yellow.

Not under warranty (94k miles). I think that's part of my question, since I'm hopefully flushing everything out, I'm don't THINK i'm "mixing" anything, but I don't know.

YUP, just open the petcock on the rad and catch and rebottle the stuff because it poisones.
fill the engine/rad up with "GOOD" water run it for a couple of minutes till the thermostat opens and open the pet **** and let it run out (this is the crud release portion of the program)

Use only demineralized water for your 50/50 mixture as tap water will only release the impurrities over time and block off the rad. (the white stuff that forms in your kettle/coffee maker)

Zerex G-05 is HOAT antifreeze.

After doing some more research, I have determined that this is what I should use and will be returning the SuperTech stuff. Just called my local Napa and they have it in stock. Thanks for the info.

Definitely use HOAT antifreeze, the Zerex G-05 stuff JRJ posted up. Putting normal AF in where HOAT AF used to be will cause serious problems.

The guy we bought our Durango off of had the cooling system serviced and the goobs who did it, put in normal poly glycol antifreeze. (Maybe the PO was the goob who did it, dunno...) Needless to say the 2 types of AF didn't agree. Everything in the cooling system had a thick white coating all over it, and the truck would run hot and over heat. I had to flush the cooling system several times and use citric acid to cut through the white crap, not a fun job....

Oh yeah, don't go there...

2 years later the radiator popped a pin hole while I was towing back from CA, through the desert, middle of summer,,, temp needle was pegged! Don't know if the citric acid caused a weak spot in the radiator or if it was just fate.

A year after that the truck had a bad head gasket, probably caused by the overheat situation, which might have been caused by cleaning up the anti-freeze snafu.

While all of those problems might be separate, I'm thinking they were all tied together... From someone putting in the wrong type of anti freeze. At least that's what I'm tellin' myself :D
