Recently bought a 2000 Aztec Sunstar with an inboard MerCruiser 350 with no Owner's Manual.

How do I know if I have an "Alpha", a "Bravo", or a "Black Scorpion"?

Engine SN is L393678.

You will probably have to post pictures of your boat to confirm this, but from the couple pictures Google had online of an Aztec Sunstar, it showed it to be an inboard, not an inboard-outboard. So it won't be an Alpha or Bravo It will be a Velvet Drive, or Borg-Warner, etc. Completely different setup.

You have a 5.7 Black Scorpion inboard (model 39511D9M1)
You don't have an Alpha or a Bravo, they are outdrives, you have a straight inboard with a transmission.
As far as owners manuals, go to your dealer with the serial number and you can order one. Here is one from 2001-2002 that should be close to what you have.

It will include the basic information about the engine and it's maintenance.

Don - thanks!

What's the difference between the SN that was on my engine (L393678) and the model number you gave?

Also - what exactly is a velvet drive? And do I have one? :)

The SN is for your particular engine, the model number is for that type engine, and not really something you need.
As far as what drive you have, I already answered that above.
I did forget to mention, Service manual 24 is the one you need for your engine and includes info on the transmission.

Re: What kind of engine do I have?

Don- I downloaded Service Manual #24 yesterday. Is it worth it to purchase one specific to my Black Scorpion engine (from a MerCruiser dealer) or will SM #24 suffice?

Thanks!

#24 IS what you would purchase from your dealer. That IS the OEM manual.
There isn't any difference in the engine itself. Maybe some wiring differences, but they are covered. Along with transmissions.
