What Kind of Fuel Gauge Do I Need

I have a pontoon boat I recently purchased (60 hp Johnson Outboard). It has a plastic fuel tank built into the back of the boat. The cap on the tank does not have a gauge and appears not to be the original cap (based on the way it fits). The cap is not vented. I want to put a cap with a gauge on, but not sure if I need a vented type. Appreciate any help!

Re: What Kind of Fuel Gauge Do I Need

Any fuel tank needs to be vented. If not, you get the same effect as sucking real hard on an empty soda bottle -- the sides cave in. Only with the gas tank, the engine cannot suck fuel if there is no vent. As for the gauge, not knowing who manufactured the tank prevents us from knowing what type of cap is needed. Generally, built-in tanks have an electrical fuel sender and use a gauge on the console. Check the top of the tank to see if there is a round opening with a plastic or metal plate over it. The plate will be about four inches in diameter.
