what kind of mercury

i,m looking at a mercury outboard to buy how can i tell what hp and year model if the serial number is gone? Looks like someone filed it of the side of the motor. The guy said he bought it for 200 hundred and never used it 2 years ago he says its a 9.8 but everything has been painted over.I can see some numbers on inside like 46172 and 837-5284 and 941-5283 but i think its part numbers. Any ideas?

thanks, but i can't see a number like that. on the side of the block there is a place that has ser and the rest of it has been flaten with a punch it looks like so i have no serial number. Is there any way to be sure its a 9.8 and not a 7

I'm not sure about mercurys, but omc products have a welsh plug(Looks like a freeze plug) on the powerhead. Somewhere on that powerhead, there should be numbers cast into it. Unless, of course, they ground those off also. Makes me wonder why they did that?? Can you post a picture of it? Or send it to me and I will post it for you.<br /><br />rickdb1@earthlink.net

thanks Rick for the info i'll try to gets some photos. And ich i hate a thief to someone broke in my house 8 years ago and stole all my guns so i know what you mean. But the guy selling it didn't know it was stolen he never took it out his 9.9 was stolen and his son found this one for him to buy but he never used it. It's been in his shed for 2 years he told me to try it he said they told him it would run but he never even tried it. I asked him if he thought the boy he bought it from would have stolen it,he said he didn't think he would.
