I HAVE A 1992 16' Tracker Nitro Bass boat. It has a 60HP Johnson outboard Motor. I don't mix oil with the gas. There is a oil tank. I do not have an owners manual and I just purchased the boat. The oil tank is getting low, What Kind of oil do I need? How do I tell if it is 2 or 4 cycle motor?

Re: What kind of oil do I need

If it has an "oil tank" its two cycle AND DON'T LET IT RUN OUT!!! THIS WILL TRASH THE ENGINE!! Any outboard 2 cycle TC-W3 oil but use the Johnson/Evinrude/OMC or Mercury brand oil to be sure. DO NOT USE MOTOR OIL!!! If ya wanna cut corners use some cheapo stuff from Wal Mart that's TC-W3. Buy it by the gal. I personally recomend the Johnson/Evinrude/OMC or Mercury brand even though it might cost a little more. You will probably have to buy the branded OMC/Merc oil at a boat dealer. Put some fuel system cleaner(FOR OUTBOARDS ONLY!! OMC or Merc brand) in with your next full tank. If your boat sits for a month at a time, some fuel stabalizer from OMC/Merc should be added too.
If the engine for any reason does not run rite STOP IT and get back to us on this board and tell us in detail whats happening. I surmise the boat has been in regular weekly use with previous owner, if it has not, you need to get back with us if its been sitting for any eriod of time. This is EXTREMELY important before you go out blaazing the lake.... :D

Re: What kind of oil do I need

You surmise correctly FlyBoyMark. The previous owner took great care of the Nitro. I have been out in it just about every weekend this spring and summer. I purchased the boat in August of 2001 and have used it about every weekend until November and had a dealer winterize it. The oil tank is getting low, just under half so its time for oil.
Thank you for the advise. I will look for some Johnson TC-W3 and some outboard fuel system cleaner. :)
