It's time for me to bite the bullet and finally buy a pot puller to pull my crab & shrimp pots; I'm getting older and my arms/back are feeling it. I was told by other crabbers to get a motor with/gear reduction. i have a offer to buy a honda 9hp motor in gd. shape without gear reduction.
Would this motor work as well as a motor with/gear reduction?
Thanks any advice is appreciated

We once used a chevy starter coupled to a pully with wire line. Was also used to deep drop for large grouper. How deep do you crab? What kind? Just curious.

I crab in 40'-100' of water, shrimp at 200'-300'. Dungeness crabs is what i fish for and spot-prawns.
i might opt for a elec. puller they run about 600-1100 new so i will try first to buy used if i can until then i will just have to man-up to pull in my catch!

We put an "EZ-Pull Pot Puller" on my wife's boat - works great, being electric is always starts! We have the 3-piece model, takes down easy for storage. dungeness and spot prawns - sounds like you are in our neighborhood (near the San Juans).

Re: What Kind of Pot Puller?

I think a 9hp will be way too much power to be effective. It must weigh a lot as well. The electric ones like "EZ pot puller" and the one I have "ACE pot hauler" seem to be most desired. They store well since the fold up and have optional carry bags. Boat shows are coming up and I would highly suggest you wait to see what the show prices are and see them demoed. I bought mine at the Seattle show last year. (The admiral made me buy it). I got a bucket of shrimp bait, a carry bag and a shrimp pot thrown in. I did switch out the plug to marinco's since I did the same to my canon downriggers to that same locking type plug. Make sure the electric wire is long enough to reach the plug.

My main concern with you using the gas engine is where to store the beast? It will be a pain and takes up a lot of real estate/aft deck when not in use....

I'm hoping to buy the Brutus 12V in April of 2011 but until then i pull my pots by hand like i did on Friday to catch these dungies. Caught these in Hood Canal about 50'- 60'.
