Our shallow flats up here are loaded with shark. Hook em on a lightweight on the flats and they will run forever! Good catch and release stuff. My daughter seems to be pretty good at nailing them....:)

By the way, thanks for another beautiful S. Florida sunset!!

Most sharks are. I hear the mako's and blues from up north are pretty tasty. In some places they make artificial scallops from shark meat and a round punch. Most people can't tell the difference. When caught the shark should be immersed in 5 gals of water with two pounds of salt. Keep it there for 6-8 hrs. Then fillet and cook. Shark meat is also known to have high levels of mercury..I practice catch and release of sharks..they are great to battle on small tackle and I find other fish I would rather eat.

Rick is dead on here too, blacktips are good but Mote Marine did some research last year all over Fla and found high mercury levels in every shark that was caught by them. They are a blast to catch, use circle hooks and cut the leader by the boat to release, there's way too many great eating fish out there to take the chance.

Rick and Sam.......

You guys are just a wealth of knowlege.....
I'm sure getting some great info.

Was wondering about the best ways to release sharks....thanks Sam!!

Are most of the sharks you catch, a result of "targeting" them specifically, or more so as a "by-product" of fishing for another species??

If specific, what methods do you use? I assume, mostly "live/dead bait" as opposed to artificials?

Get the large ARC De-hooker. It's expensive but works great and you'll keep all of your appendages. You'll be safe and the shark wont have to wear your hook as jewelry. It takes a loooong time for that hook to rot out!

Depending on the hight of your gonwales will depend on the size...I use the largest ( 34" ) so I don't have to lean over too far over. Also keeps my hand totally clear of teeth!

Re: What kind of Shark is this?

I have several ARC dehookers, they are a pain in the butt to use with fish that have a tough hide like sharks. When I shark fish I realize I'm probably gonna loose the hook, so I tend not to buy $11 Owner 10/0's or 12/0's anymore. Small sharks are no issue, you can grab them by the tail and bring them on board and get your gear back, big ones I cut the leader.
