what kind of wiring ?

My motor is a 1978 merc 1150, tower of power. Did merc use aluminum wiring at that time for these motors ? Some of mine just crumbs and I am afraid to move it around too much as I make repairs and adjustments to my motor.

Merc used good quality marine wire. Marine wire is tinned copper. Aftermarket motor wiring harnesses are avail for about $100. C/O surplusunlimited.com

High quality primary wire is tinned. Merc used the good stuff at the time, but the insulation on most of them has succumbed to the ravages of time.

Modern vinyl insulation stands up a little better.
