What length are your throttle/shift cables on your 16'?

I'm replacing the throttle and shifter cables on my 16' SS. Currently is has 16' cables that do a large loop and exit out the middle of the splash well. I repositioned a cable to make it a straight shot down gunwale with a gradual bend to the splash well then another gradual bend out the center of the splash well to the OB. This would be put the cables at 11', still with what appears to be enough slack. I know some people say you need a loop, but what am I missing as to why they need to be so long?

On thing you kinda want to avoid is an "S" curve. A big loop is better (more smooth action, ya know).

I installed 13' on my 79 16 SS last year. Gave me a nice curl to move easily when the OB turns and is the length recommended.... forget where its recommended but is somewhere around here...

I had already picked up some 15' when I posted this. I know the standard is the big loop, just seems like it could be done without it. Haven't fully finished installing the new cables, but wow what a difference in how they move. Not to mention I couldn't coil up the old ones to fit the new boxes if I tried. Looking forward to hopefully some smooth remote action!
