what length steering cables?

i am buying a set of new shifting cables for an 87 johnson 88 spl
the boat is a 17' mckee offshore fisherman
the cables that were in it were 18' seems a lil excessive
what size would yall buy or the proper way to measure it?

It has little to do with the length of the boat, more the distance the cables need to reach.

My 18' center console has 20' cables.

My 16' uses a 14' steering cable, but a 17' shift cable.

You generally need a loop at the motor end (or a large bend), to keep the cables from binding up.
