I found an 83 17' mako cc with a 84 115hp evinrude on it. It seems clean. The guy wants $3500. I thought that this is a bit steep for a boat that is 30 years old. What makes a mako good? Can it rot like most other boats with wooden stringers and transom. I will be back bay crabbin, fishin and drinkin mostly. Is that motor any good?

...What makes a used mako good?

I adjusted your question so that the answer works better. The answer: the previous owner.

When you're buying a used boat, you're buying condition. At 30 years old, that boat could be a mess or pristine depending on how well cared for it was. My boat is 40 years old, and was VERY well cared for by the P.O. The Mako can have all sorts of issues with it even if not rot, just like any boat.

Part of it might be prices in your area too. $3,500 sounds hight for that boat (unless in "like new" condition, I suppose) in my area, but NJ might be a bit higher.

Have you put it on the water, checked the floor, transom, etc.?

Well, As P.T. Barnum said: "There's a sucker born every minute." Sooner or later someone will think the boat is worth it and buy it. It doesn't need to be you.

Don't we all think our boat is worth more than it actually is?

Re: What makes a Mako boat good?

I've seen plenty of older 17 makos go for 2500-3k here in the Houston area. If its in usable condition with no rot and has a good running motor / solid trailer, 3k is not a horrible price in my Openion. But if you want an older boat that will be solid and have less chance of stuctural Problems look at Boston Whalers they will be a bit more expensive but will last you a long time if there hull is not cracked. Also old 17ft McKee crafts are great boats , kind of like a cheap whaler they will be in the same price range of the mako you'r looking at.

Re: What makes a Mako boat good?

Mako was a family owned business with a reputation for craftsmanship and sea worthy designs. The classic Makos, pre-Tracker Marine, are still highly sought after boats that command top dollar when restored.

Agreed. There's more to the question. well built seaworthy boat designed for outdoor use, like a Mako, often won't have the structural problems the lake boaters seem to encounter with every bayliner clone more than 10 years old. The self-bailing deck keeps most of the rain water out of the bilge and what gets in there simply drains out the plug hole, on a trailer, or is pumped out. While obviously mainterance is the crucial point (not much more than leaving the plug out and being sure it drains), because these hulls require less maintenance (you don't even have to cover them) they have a much greater chance of being sound. In fact, you may assume almost every 30 year old bayliner clone is rotted, you can just as safely assume that almost every 30 year old Mako is not. That's why they hold their value.
And the low sides in the rear is a great feature. You just have to train your children better.
