what might this be?

This is the tool that hooks a garden hose to my outdrive so I can run her out of the water and give my boat an enema if she was in salt water. When I picked up my boat the previous owner gave this to me and told me what it was and why it was important. This is dry rotted and it's not usable.

What would I search for this so I could get a new one? Could I use something else in its place? I have a Mercruiser MC-1 outdrive. Thanks!

It can be called by various names: engine flusher or "muffs" as some like to call them. Around $10 or so: West Marine, Wally World, Bass Pro, pretty much any marine supply store will have them.

It's just the original design, as Mark pointed out.
Definitly look into a replacement.
But more important, how long has the PO used this/that one without replacing the water pump?

Re: what might this be?

Thanks! I found a few online but I'm going to go to a marine shop to find one that fits the best. The previous owner hasnt run this boat for 10 years. I have to do a complete rebuild of the motor and the outdrive.

Other than a water pump kit shown here:

what else would I need to rebuild my outdrive? I'm very new at boats. I was thinking of getting new u-joints even though everything spins freely and feels smooth.

I would start by taking time to read a little and start here. You can possible get a free manual for your application here. This is going to be a big investment in your time and most likely an even bigger investment in your money! I would suggest NOT buying anything for this 'so-called' rebuild until you have a better idea of the task at hand. By no means do I ever want to discourage anyone from trying something new. I just suggest, as with any investment - Do some research regarding what your are planning. This will not be a quick fix project and the more you learn/know about the subject the less likely to spend your hard-earned needlessly. You will need to buy special tools for some of the jobs your are planning. Most likely you will need to learn about fiberglass repair and possibly transom/deck replacing. This is all doable given enough time and money but just take a little time to read what others have done.

This forum is the best for newbies in boating. The free flow of information gleaned here is priceless and I am always humbled by the knowledge and willingness of those who know to share with those of us that do not know. Newbies are always welcomed and seldom flamed.

Re: what might this be?

finx,
Welcome.
One of the most important pieces of information needed from you to make this forum helpful to you is engine serial number and type (M/C140, 165, 3.0, 3.7 etc). The same info is needed from you for your sterndrive, serial number, (Pre Alpha, Alpha 1, Bravo etc). Starting with that info the answers to you questions will be much more accurate. This info is needed with each New thread you start.

Good luck, we are all eager to help with your project.

Re: what might this be?

I do have a manual for my MC-1. I've been reading through it and I just dont know exactly what a bad outdrive looks or feels like. I know i probably need a new impeller. I was going to replace that anyways. Any tips on what to look for? Thanks!

Where could I find the serial number on my stern drive?

Re: what might this be?

The serial number is generally on the right side in the upper area where the Mercruiser logo would be.

Your manual tells you/shows you how/where to locate the serial number. If the one you have doesn't tell you that, you should get your manual on here (in the technical info sticky section). Just sayin'. KTB
