I have a 14ft center console. It came with a Johnson 48spl but the motor needs alot of work. I have a mercury 65 hp that I can put on it. SO my question is should I use the Mercury 65hp or fix the Johnson 48 and use it.

Well, I am a diehard omc man myself, so I must ask this. What is wrong with the 48SPL? Has the Merc been checked(compression, water pump, foot)?

Well the Johnson had and under pitched prop put on it and fried and I meen fried one of the piston. The mercury runs but needs the carbs cleaned.

Cleaning carbs is WHOLE LOT easier than rebuilding an entire engine. I did two carbs today in an hour and a half. I was loafing.

Yeah, I would go with the Merc also. However, being me, I would keep the 48SPL around just to keep the better half annoyed. No, no I didnot type that. I would find someone with another one with a busted foot and blend the two together, just so I could have something else to annoy the better half with.

part out the 48, lower unit, carbs, stator with complete elect system. cowl. i have broken motors completely down, and sold all the parts. made more than i would if it had been a complete running motor.

Good advice so far. Which brand fits you? If you like Mercs, run the Merc. If you like OMC's, run the Merc until you can swap out the Johnson powerhead. Kind of like picking a car....are you a Ford or GM guy? Same with outboards, for me anyway. I get along with Mercs, but after running a few OMC's I'll take an OMC anyday just for ease of maintenance.

Hey Casper, is that 14footer rated for a 65HP motor? A lot are not. That should be part of your decision process.

Let me have one vote for the Merc. Those old inlines were great.

the boat said rated for up to 50 hp. I didnt know if 15 more hp would make a big difference , I am new to boats some maybe that is a rookie mistake.

The Johnson is your safest choice(legal reasons) and due to my personal prejudice, the better engine.

Re: What motor should I use

i did not think of the over powering, as i have a 14 rated for a 65. but yes there are many legal ramifications.

The United States Coast Guard has an opinion on this frequently asked question, and their answer from their website is reproduced below:
Can I use a bigger motor on my boat than what it's rated for?
It is not a violation of Coast Guard regulations to install or use an engine larger than specified on the capacity label, but there may be state regulations prohibiting it, and restrictions from your own insurance company regarding this.
There are no Coast Guard regulations against exceeding the safe loading capacity, however, there may be State regulations or restrictions from your insurance company which prohibit this. There is a Coast Guard regulation that gives Coast Guard Boarding Officers the power to terminate the use of a boat (send it back to shore) if, in the judgment of the Boarding Officer, the boat is overloaded. There is no fine for this, unless the operator refuses the Boarding Officer's order. We certainly hope that you will abide by the rating, as overloading may lead to capsizing or swamping of the boat.
NOTE: The Coast Guard Capacity Information label is required only on monohull boats less than 20' in length. The label is not required on multi-hull boats, pontoon boats (catamarans), or on any sailboats, canoes, kayaks, or inflatable boats, regardless of length.
As the Coast Guard mentions, local regulations may apply. For example, in the state of Ohio one should be guided by this regulation:
Capacity Plates
(ORC 1547.39 & ORC 1547-40)
No person shall operate or permit operation of a watercraft in excess of any of the stated limits on the capacity plate. When no capacity plate exists, no person shall operate or permit operation of a watercraft if a reasonably prudent person would believe the total load aboard or the total horsepower of any motor or engine presents a risk of physical harm to persons or property.

Re: What motor should I use

15 horsepower is not a lot and the local police would probably never notice if you were behaving responsibly. This assumes that your 14 footer isn't a base model tinnie. However, there still is the legal and insurance questions, and the question of additional weight of the larger engine.

However, if you should decide on the Merc 65, there will be a major difference in performance. I think it is 3 or 4 cylinder engine while the 48 spl is only two cylinders. ( I know older Merc 50s were 4 cylinder engines) Makes a big difference in torque and overall get up and go.

Ok check this out
1993 johnson 48 hp weight 191 dry
1975 mercury 65 hp weight 185 dry.
So there realy isnt a weight issue.
